I created this chocolate cake recipe not only for us health conscious, gluten-free vegan type, but also for all our friends and family who may enjoy a slice at a birthday party, celebration or simply dessert. The recipe requires very simple ingredients, however a few of them like the sweet potato and balsamic vinegar may surprise you.
Don’t worry the cake will not taste like balsamic covered yams, they simply add depth of flavor and richness. Making this vegan chocolate cake literally my favorite recipe of all time.
I will answer some of the most pressing questions about chocolate cake- like how to make it vegan. Is it healthy? What is vegan chocolate cake anyway? Can you freeze chocolate cake? How to make vegan chocolate cake frosting/icing? Why balsamic vinegar in chocolate cake?
Let’s begin by clearing up the most important thing.
WHAT IS VEGAN CHOCOLATE CAKE?
Vegan Chocolate cake, is CAKE. It is chocolate cake. Just because it is vegan and gluten free does not mean that it is some chocolate alien saucer! It tastes, just like chocolate cake, because it is chocolate cake.
Is vegan chocolate cake healthy?
Depending on the recipe you make, vegan chocolate cake may not be all that healthy because it could use a lot of sugar, oil and vegan butter. However it is for sure HEALTHIER than chocolate cake using eggs, butter and cream. This Vegan chocolate cake recipe is definitely much healthier than all other chocolate cake recipes because most include lots of sugar and oil in the cake and a frosting that is literally just vegan butter, sugar and cocoa powder. I am not eating that crap! So for this recipe I created a frosting that is made from cooked sweet potato in the place of the butter, and trust me it is delicious.
Can you freeze chocolate cake?
Yes, you can freeze chocolate cake. In fact I have frozen this vegan chocolate cake before, just make sure you slice it prior to freezing.
How to make vegan chocolate cake frosting/icing?
Vegan chocolate cake frosting is typically made with vegan butter/shortening and powdered sugar. But NOT THIS RECIPE. This vegan chocolate cake frosting recipe is made from sweet potato, cocoa powder, nut/seed butter and maple syrup! Make it by blending it all together in a really good blender, and it is that east.
How to make Healthy Vegan chocolate cake Frosting/icing?
Healthy vegan chocolate cake frosting is made by replacing the dairy butter with plant based butters, or using sweet potato like I have in this recipe.
How to make sweet potato chocolate cake? / How to make chocolate cake without oil?
Sweet potato chocolate cake is simply referring to combining cooked (steamed/boiled/baked) sweet potato into the wet ingredients of the cake- in the place of oil. Doing this adds lots of moisture and great texture to the cake while adding nutrition because sweet potatoes are good for us.
Why balsamic vinegar in chocolate cake?
Ok the balsamic vinegar thing really confused me when I first started to bake. It just seems weird. A few years back I was researching what other recipes were using in chocolate cake, and happen to ask one of my good friends who is a baker. One of the things she confirmed to me was that yes, balsamic vinegar can add lots of depth of flavor to chocolate baking. WOW. So I tried it, and I’m sold.
I previously created this recipe on my running blog (plantpositiverunning) and people loved it!!! That was a few years back before I was making recipe videos and had a recipe card thingy (i use tasty recipes).
So i figured it would be fun to re-create the recipe and share it again!
I am not joking that this is my favorite recipe, in fact the one pictured here only lasted about 24 hours in our house!
If you make this recipe, it would really help if you left it a star rating. Because I am a new blogger I need all the help I can get with comments, shares and ratings. Thank you in advanced and I hope you love this recipe as much as I do!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Frosting
- 2 cups cooked, mashed Sweet Potato (I used yams)
- 1/2 cup Cocoa Powder
- 1/2 cup Peanut Butter or Nut/Seed butter of choice
- 1/2 cup Maple Syrup
- Splash of non-dairy milk if necessary*
- Preheat oven to 350F
- Mix together dry ingredients in a medium mixing bowl or kitchen-aid mixer
- Blend together wet ingredients until smooth
- Pour wet ingredients over dry and mix by hand or with a mixer until well combined
- Prepare two round 8-9” cake pans by spraying lightly with cooking spray
- Pour the batter evenly between the two pans
- Bake for 25 minutes at 350F (convection if possible).
- Remove from oven and allow to cool completely before removing from pan and frosting
For the frosting:
- Blend all ingredients together in a high-speed blender (vitamix) with tamper until a super thick, creamy and smooth frosting has formed.
- (It may be necessary to add a splash of non-dairy milk to allow the mixture to really blend)
- Frost cake as desired, making one double layered cake as I did (see video) or making two single layer cakes.
Keeps in the fridge for 7 days
I have used Almond Butter, Mixed Nut butter, and sunbutter in this recipe and all turned out amazing.
